Sabie - A Mpumalanga councillor was arrested for allegedly shoplifting at the Usave Shoprite in Sabie on Friday.

The councillor was allegedly caught stealing sweets inside Usave Shoprite while shopping.

He and other members of Democratic Alliance were headed to Nelspruit for a march to the provincial police commissioner of Mpumalanga to hand over memorandum when they stopped to grab snacks for the road trip.

The councillor will be making his first court appearance on Monday at Sabie Magistrate Court said police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi.

Hlathi said that the accused is currently out on station bail.

"He is currently out on a R300 bail and his case is being investigated," said Hlathi.

Hlathi did not want to divulge what the councillor had been caught stealing.
