Johannesburg - Three men wanted for a string of gang rapes and armed robberies have been arrested in Middelburg, Mpumalanga police said on Friday.

The suspects, aged 30, 33, and 39, were arrested at the Vaalbank informal settlement on New Year's Eve, Captain Khanyisile Zwane said in a statement.

They allegedly raped two women on December 16. The first woman, 27, was hitchhiking with her boyfriend on Bethal Road, Middelburg, when three armed men approached them around 20:00.

They robbed the couple of cash and cellphones and raped the woman.

A car broke down on the same road a few hours later. The occupants were a pregnant woman, her husband and their children. The three held the family at gunpoint, robbed them, and raped the 30-year-old mother.

Two of the men had been linked to a rape and robbery that took place in February last year near the Middelburg Mall. Two teenage girls were attacked, robbed of their scooter, and raped.

The three arrested had been charged and were expected to appear in court soon.
