Mbombela - Police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt for a pupil who is believed to have opened fire, injuring two other pupils in a village outside White River.

On Tuesday afternoon, Masoyi police spokesperson Constable Naniki Nonyane told a News24 correspondent that the incident took place in Mganduzweni on Friday afternoon.

"We do not know why he shot them, but the suspect, 20, is enrolled at Royal Private School, while the two victims - Senzo Mogane and Sydwell Bhekifa Fakude, both 18 years old - are enrolled at Jerusalem High School. Luckily, the victims are still alive. One was shot in the neck, while the other was shot on his thigh," said Nonyane.

Nonyane said the two victims were admitted to Mshadza Clinic before being transferred to Themba Hospital, where they were treated and discharged.

"The suspect has not yet been arrested. He ran away immediately after the incident, but we have opened two cases of attempted murder and a warrant of arrest has been issued for him.

“We are pleading with the community to help us find the suspect. We also urge the public not to take the law into their own hands, but to alert the police about his whereabouts," she said.

She added that the suspect was also facing a separate charge of illegal possession of a firearm.

Provincial education department spokesperson Jasper Zwane condemned the incident and pleaded with parents to play a role in educating their children about firearms.
