Mbombela - Textbooks and all other learning and support materials were delivered to schools before doors opened for the new academic year, Mpumalanga Education MEC Reginah Mhaule, said on Wednesday.

"The material was delivered last year November," she said, adding that school furniture arrived in 2015, based on orders placed by schools.

Mhaule said temporary teachers who served more than two years had been made permanent, in keeping with the Education Labour Relations Council Resolution No 1 of 2015.

The department’s teacher-pupil ratio was also being kept at a favourable 1:30, she said.

"As such, we do not expect any learner to be without a teacher in front of them," she said.

The MEC said all schools had also received their paper budgets and post establishments for 2016.

She said seven new schools would start operating this year.

The matric pass rate in Mpumalanga dropped marginally from 79% in 2014 to 78.6% in 2015.
