Johannesburg – A woman was killed after she was struck by lightning in the Mpumalanga Lowveld during a storm on Thursday afternoon, paramedics said.

The 30-year-old was working on a farm near the Lowveld College of Agriculture when the incident occurred, said Netcare 911 spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe.

Paramedics carried out CPR on the woman, who was still alive when they arrived on the scene but in a critical condition, she said.

"Paramedics managed to stabilise the critically injured woman on scene and then transported her to a nearby hospital for further medical care," said Mathe. "Sadly, the woman died in hospital this evening [Thursday]."
