Pretoria - Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga has jumped the gun by rushing to the police to open cases against the previous administration, the African National Congress Youth League said on Friday.

Financial reports tabled to the council should detail all unauthorised, irregular, wasteful, and fruitless expenditure, regional chairperson Lesego Makhubela told reporters in Pretoria.

These would be sent the municipal property assessment corporation - a committee accountable to council - for a decision on recovering any irregular expenditure.

On Thursday, Msimanga laid criminal charges against three senior officials of the previous administration. He based his decision on two forensic reports.

Makhubela questioned in what capacity Msimanga laid the charges. He challenged Msimanga to release a report involving current finance mayoral committee member Maraliese Fourie’s alleged wrongdoing while chief financial officer of the Pretoria municipality.

Makhubela said the ANC commissioned the forensic reports when it was still in charge of Tshwane, following complaints of alleged fraud in the municipality.

Msimanga on Thursday said he was investigating contracts worth more than R10bn. In one case, a contract was found where the money had been paid, but no work carried out.
