Johannesburg - Municipalities should be people-centred and free of corruption in order to properly serve the people, EFF leader Julius Malema told thousands of supporters at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

"The essence of the EFF commitments is that everything the EFF municipality does should be people-centred and should be directed toward creation of jobs and provision of quality services to all," said Malema.

"In this regard, the EFF seeks to create people's municipalities whose primary inspiration and focus is the people."

Malema said the party would ensure that municipalities built fresh food markets and fruit stalls for locally produced food and other necessities.

He said they would ensure that 50% of the basic goods, services and products consumed in their municipalities were manufactured, processed or assembled within the municipal area.

"The EFF's people's municipality will abolish the usage of consultants to perform basic functions of the municipality. The EFF's people's municipality services and operational centres will be open six days per week in order to allow full-time workers to attend municipal services needs during weekends.

"The EFF's people's municipality will be transparent, corruption-free and ensure there is value for money in every cent spent," said Malema.

He added that they would put an end to cadre deployment in their municipalities, ensuring that people were employed based on their qualifications, and not party affiliation.
