Pietermaritzburg - An attempt by a convicted murderer to take his own life after gunning down his lover was “cowardly”, a Pietermaritzburg court has heard.

Judge Nkosinathi Chili jailed Sifiso Ngubo (30) of Underberg for 25 years for gunning down mother of two Zinhle Ndlovu (25) at Umzimkhulu River Lodge where she worked.

He said a clear message must be sent to the public that no one has the right to kill their partner just because they are cheating on them.

On December 14 last year, she was shot 13 times in front of her mother Busisiwe Mdakane, who testified at the trial.

Judge Chili said the court accepted Ngubo was angry after his lover allegedly confessed that her second child was not his, but said the court could not condone his anger.

He said the fact that Ngubo tried, but failed, to shoot himself in the head after killing Ndlovu was also not mitigating but a “cowardly” act aimed at avoiding responsibility for his actions. The court considered in Ngubo’s favour that he changed his plea and admitted guilt.
