Cape Town - A body that washed up at a Gordon's Bay beach on Friday has been identified, police confirmed on Wednesday.

But the origins of limbs found on the shore that same day remain a mystery.

Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said the body discovered at Bikini Beach was this week identified by the family of a 22-year-old man.

"It is suspected that the deceased is responsible for his own death. No foul play is suspected," she said.

Rwexana was not yet in a position to provide the man's name to News24.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring on Friday said the man was suspected to have been dead for some time.

Before the body washed ashore, paramedics were on Friday called to Gordon's Bay main beach where they discovered a dismembered limb had washed ashore.

After attending to the body, they had again been called to Gordon's Bay main beach, where they found a second limb.

The National Sea Rescue Institute and local authorities searched the area in a bid to find the body to which the limbs belonged.

On Wednesday, Rwexana said the body parts had not yet been identified.

Police are investigating.
