N3 still closed in Maritzburg after fatal tanker blaze

2016-04-26 12:34

Durban - The N3 remains closed at Town Hill in Pietermaritzburg after a tanker crash on Monday which claimed the lives of two people.

At least seven others were injured when a truck collided with construction vehicles and caught fire on the N3 near the Peter Brown off-ramp.

Freight traffic were built up for almost 30km, passed Howick.

Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said that releasing the backlog of trucks and cars which had built up since the accident was the first priority.

“We had some people sleeping in their vehicles last night and we need to get this done today. We are using that one lane to alleviate the backlog and then, once that is done, we will clean up the scene properly and then open the freeway again. This will all be done today," she said on Tuesday.

On Monday, ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw said the truck allegedly lost control and collided with at least three construction vehicles.

The N3 is currently undergoing maintenance.
