Cape Town – A Nando’s employee in Cape Town was shot dead, and another injured, in what is believed to have been a case of mistaken identity by the police, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Thursday.

Police officers said they received a complaint of an alleged ATM bombing that was set to take place in Du Noon on Wednesday night, said IPID spokesperson Robbie Raburabu.

"Upon getting there, they did not find anything."

While officers were still patrolling the area, they spotted a vehicle matching the description and shot at it.

"It turned out that it was obviously the wrong vehicle."

Raburabu said a woman was killed and another critically injured.

Nando’s South Africa said it was “shocked and saddened” to learn on Thursday morning of the casualties near their Sandown branch.

It identified the deceased as Phumeza Fudumele and the injured as Zanele Dineka.

The restaurant chain’s business development director Trudi van Niekerk said the shooting apparently happened when their staff members were on their way home after an evening shift.

Senior management were trying to find out more details.

They were also in touch with the franchisee, staff, family members, and the police.

Dineka was shot in the leg and discharged on Thursday morning, Nando's added.

Counselling had been arranged.

“The restaurant is closed for business today as staff are given an opportunity to come to terms with the shock of last night’s tragedy.”

It extended its condolences.

Cases of murder and attempted murder were under investigation, said Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana.

Raburabu confirmed their investigation continued.
