Durban - Convicted murderer Rajiv Narandas was arrested on Thursday, nearly a week after he was supposed to start serving a 15-year prison sentence.

Police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza said Narandas had been detained and would now have no choice but to start serving his sentence.

"We have him now. We will also be talking to him about the certain delays that were experienced about him handing himself over, this is something that will require an explanation," she said.

The self-proclaimed body builder was admitted to hospital last week on the eve of the date he was to report to prison to begin serving his sentence, after a petition to the Constitutional Court to overturn his conviction failed.

He was later discharged from hospital after an undisclosed medical procedure.

His mother Roseanne had posted a series of pictures on messenger application Whatsapp as her son's whereabouts remained unknown.

First she was pictured posing with a newspaper posted emblazoned with his face. Later she posted a wider angle of the same shot with him grinning next to her.

The police, the Department of Correctional Services and the National Prosecuting Authority had all refused to accept responsibility amid fears that Narandas would skip the country.

His sentence relates to the murder of Veenand Singh outside Shoukara nightclub in Sandton in 2008.
