Johannesburg - A national dialogue was needed to move the country forward, former president Thabo Mbeki said on Monday.

"It's quite clear that there are many things that have not gone right," he told reporters in Johannesburg.

These included, "things reported by Statistics South Africa about the youth, levels of unemployment, levels of poverty, even the fact that the Constitutional Court had to read out a lesson to the nation about what is meant by a Constitutional democracy".

"It illustrates that something is wrong," he said.

The citizens of the country needed to discuss what was wrong and look at where they came from, where they were today, and where they wanted to be in the future.

Mbeki said this was a stance taken by eight foundations in the country, including his.

"We have to get together otherwise... we will not be able to solve any of our problems."

Mbeki said he believed this was simple to understand, but vitally important.

All the challenges facing the country were interconnected and needed to be frankly addressed.

"Let us all sit down and speak frankly to one another."
