Upington – More than seven years after raping a teenage girl on the bonnet of his car, a Northern Cape man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, Northern Cape police said on Monday.

Piet “Tatoe” Ntoga, 44, was sentenced by the Regional Court in Upington, spokesperson Captain Francois Steenkamp said in a statement.

Ntoga gave her a lift while she was hiking from Keimoes to Kenhardt on January 27, 2009. He had another passenger that he dropped off in Upington.

About 40km before Kenhardt, Ntoga stopped on a gravel road and raped the girl on his car’s bonnet.

He threatened to rape her again on their way to Kenhardt.

“As they approached Kenhardt, he reduced speed and this allowed the victim to jump out of the vehicle and flee into the field.”

Ntoga then returned to his home in Kakamas. Police found the girl on the side of the road.

Kakamas police station commander, Captain Riaan van Wyk, lauded the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Elrich Mienies, for his work.
