Thohoyandou - A new bridge, set to replace one damaged by floods 17 years ago, is expected to bring some relief to the residents of Ha-Mudimeli, in Limpopo.

On Thursday, Makhado Mayor Shonisani Mildred Sinyosi announced the allocation of R12m for the construction of a bridge in the village outside Thohoyandou.

Since devastating floods in 2000, residents have faced extreme difficulties when crossing the damaged bridge during the rainy season.

The mayor encouraged contractors to employ local labour in order to avoid squabbles that might halt the construction.

She urged the contractors to deliver quality work.

"We need to see value for the money; we are going to pay you. This is taxpayers' money and it must be used for a good cause. We need a quality bridge for the people."

She also warned residents about vandalism.

"We do not want to see residents burning tyres on this bridge. Let us respect and protect government property."

Local traditional leader Chief Radzilani Mudimeli said: "We have been patient for this bridge since 2000. It feels like a dream come true. I am delighted the residents will get jobs from this construction."

He said at least 30 temporary jobs would be created when the construction of the new bridge started in the coming two weeks. The bridge was expected to be completed in July this year.
