PICS: Thousands left homeless after devastating Cape Town fire

Thousands of people have been left homeless after a deadly fire blazed through an informal settlement near Fish Hoek, Cape Town. View pictures of the aftermath here.

Cape Town - A new fire station was being planned for Masiphumelele, the City of Cape Town said on Tuesday.

The new base, expected to cost between R12m and R14m, was expected to be completed by 2017, said mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith.

He said the township was among those identified as an area where response time was "challenging".

This was because the closest fire stations were in Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town and travelling to Masiphumelele was difficult when there was congestion on Kommetjie Road.

"We have secured the property at the entrance to Masiphumelele and are busy with appointing quantity surveyors," Smith said.

The station was expected to employ 30 firemen at a cost of R6m per year.

The deep south was considered a fire hotspot, he added.

More than 4 000 people were displaced after a devastating blaze destroyed 1 123 homes early on Sunday morning.

Two people died in the fire.
