Cape Town - A very jovial President Jacob Zuma told Parliament on Thursday that Commissioner Vuma Mashinini, the new chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission, was not his friend.

Always seen as a Zuma ally, Mashinini was hired to head the IEC in October, almost a year after the controversial resignation of Pansy Tlakula.

Laughing through most of the questions asked of him in Parliament, Zuma, responding to a question from EFF MP Hlengiwe Hlophe, denied that he had been involved in getting Mashinini the job.

He was responding to questions on the integrity of the IEC.

In fact, Zuma insisted, Mashinini was not his friend.

"He was a colleague at work. He was hired according to his expertise and qualifications. I never hired my friend. I was not even involved in the hiring process."

Zuma said it was judges and Parliament that had been involved in the hiring process.

"They saw his name, selected it and saw that they had the right qualifications for the job. So where do I fit in all that?"

He said his only involvement was signing off on a decision that was already taken by Parliament.
