Durban - Paramedics have managed to save a newborn baby which was found abandoned in the bush on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said that the baby boy, just hours old, had been found by members of the community in the Sobantu township.

“ER24 paramedics were notified and upon arrival at the scene found the baby hidden under a blanket down an embankment," she said.

"The baby was assessed and it was found that he had a low body temperature. Paramedics provided rapid treatment and warmed the child. During assessment of the baby, no visible injuries were found."

It is understood that the baby, weighing just under 3kg, was born just a few metres away from where he was found.
