Durban - A man died and a woman was badly wounded in a house fire in Newcastle, KZN paramedics reported on Sunday.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said that on Sunday afternoon paramedics and fire-fighters had rushed to a house Suryaville.

“Upon their arrival they found no indication of a house fire, however bystanders on the scene quickly escorted them into the house,” he said.

“It was evident that a fire took place inside the house, however it appeared as if it was extinguished some time ago. An elderly man was found lying on the kitchen floor. He had no signs of life and appeared to have been dead for some time. Paramedics found an elderly woman in the bedroom with extensive burns to her legs. She was in shock and severe pain,” Vermaak said.

He said that according to the injured woman, the fire apparently took place sometime on Saturday. “The couple were only discovered this afternoon when friends came over and entered the house. They alerted emergency services,” he said.
