A financial manager at the Dutch Reformed Church Kempton-Kruin in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, was held at gunpoint outside the church premises and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken from him.

According to the police, Frans Bester had been to the bank on February 18 and upon his arrival at the church, was accosted by two suspects.

"We can confirm that the Ekurhuleni North task team is currently investigating a case of armed robbery which was reported on February 18," police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali said.

Mtshali said the suspects were driving a Mercedes Benz, one of them pointed a firearm at Bester and demanded money that was apparently in a briefcase and drove off.

Bester was unharmed during the robbery.

Suspects might have followed Bester from bank

Mtshali added that the police were not at liberty to disclose the amount that was taken from Bester.

News24 reached out to Bester for comment but he refused to dwell on the incident, but confirmed that it happened on the day.

"I don't want to elaborate further on this thing," Bester said.

He said the matter was now in the hands of the police.

Mtshali said the police believed that Bester was followed by the suspects.

No arrests have been made and investigations continue.

The police have appealed to anyone who might have information to get in touch with them.
