Durban – The eThekwini municipality has instituted night time water cuts in large parts of Durban to ease pressure on KwaZulu-Natal’s dams during the drought.

Residents and businesses in areas supplied by the Midmar and Albert Falls dams were warned of “on-going interrupted water supply” until there was sufficient rainfall, the city said in a statement issued over the weekend.

Water cuts would be between 21:00 and 04:00 to allow reservoirs to fill up for the next day.

Midmar Dam supplies Pinetown, Cato Ridge, KwaXimba, Umbumbulu, Georgedale, Hammarsdale, Shongweni, Salem, Umlazi, and parts of Folweni.

Albert Falls Dam supplies Durban North, Umhlanga, Verulam, KwaMashu, Ntuzuma, Newlands, Westville, Reservoir Hills, KwaDabeka, Clermont, Pinetown, Queensburgh, Chatsworth, Umlazi, and parts of Folweni.

If water cuts at night did not have the desired effect, limits to daytime water supply would be considered.
