Port Elizabeth – Coalition talks in Nelson Mandela Bay are at a sensitive stage and would be finalised by Wednesday, former mayor Danny Jordaan said on Sunday.

Briefing the media with the ANC's regional task team and Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu, the party refused to disclose who they were talking to regarding coalitions, but hastened to assure the public all was not lost.

The ANC lost its majority in Nelson Mandela Bay in the recent local government elections, resulting in the party needing 11 seats from opposition parties to form a government.

The DA has 57 seats and needed four more to obtain a clear majority.

The ANC once again reiterated that no one had won a majority in the highly contested metro. “No party received more than 50% in the Metro – contrary to the misinformation by some desperate elements that seem to suggest that they are winners,” he said.

Jordaan called the DA "desperate" for claiming victory in Nelson Mandela Bay and said Sisulu was working around the clock towards finalising a coalition.

Voter turnout

The smaller parties – including the EFF, UDM, AIC, UFEC, Cope and PA – hold 13 of the 120 seats.
The ANC blamed inclement weather and terrible voting conditions for low voter turnout, which in turn led to them losing their majority.

“You win by voter turnout,” Jordaan said on Sunday.

He said the ANC had agreed that they should pursue an approach on coalitions that put the interests of the communities first, a pro-poor approach.

Jordaan said the party would announce their coalition plans on Wednesday, a day before the first council meeting in the metro.

The council meeting scheduled for Monday has since been postponed to Thursday to allow for more time for negotiations.
