Cape Town - Refuse collectors in Cape Town have been forbidden from asking for Christmas donations, and the city has warned residents to guard against “con artists”.

“We have received reports of residents being asked, sometimes aggressively, for Christmas boxes or donations,” mayoral committee member for utility services, Ernest Sonnenberg, said in a statement on Thursday.

“There have also been reports of threats by these people that refuse will not be collected if the demand for a Christmas box is not met,” he said.

As a result, the city had prohibited staff from soliciting Christmas boxes and donations.

Residents could however give a voluntary donation to staff as a gesture of thanks and goodwill.

“City staff are appropriately remunerated,” he said.

Incidents of intimidation could be reported to 0860 103 089 between 08:00 and 16:30. Apart from the date, time, and place, a vehicle registration number should be provided so that the culprits could be identified.

An e-mail could also be sent to

Reports would be investigated immediately and, where residents were willing to testify, the city would prosecute offenders.
