No one shortlisted for ConCourt vacancy

2016-03-01 18:02

Johannesburg - No candidates had been shortlisted for a vacancy in the Constitutional Court following the retirement of Justice Johann van der Westhuizen, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) said on Tuesday.

This was because it had not received a sufficient number of nominations, the JSC said in a statement.

There were only three candidates nominated, which was fewer than the threshold required by the Constitution.

The JSC said the vacancy would be re-advertised in due course.

There were 13 other vacancies in various superior courts around the country.

This included two in the Supreme Court of Appeal, two in the Eastern Cape division of the high court, the post of KwaZulu-Natal deputy judge president, two vacancies in the KwaZulu-Natal division of the high court, Limpopo deputy judge president, two vacancies in the Limpopo division of the high court, Western Cape deputy judge president and two vacancies in the Western Cape division of the high court.

The JSC said a total of 34 candidates had been shortlisted.

The candidates would be interviewed during a sitting of the JSC to be held in Cape Town from April 4 to 8.
