Mahikeng - A North West court has jailed an unemployed man for seven years for illegal possession of explosives, the Hawks said on Thursday.

The Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court sentenced Rashid Hassan, 34, on Tuesday August 1, Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso said.

Rashid was arrested in a sting operation at a Sasol petrol station in Klerksdorp in December. He was trying to sell military explosives, chemicals used to make explosives, and a detonator.

Two other people arrested with Rashid, aged 19 and 34, were released.

The head of the Hawks in North West, Major-General Linda Mbana, applauded the investigators for their work.
