North West – Police in North West are hard at work in preparation for the 104th ANC anniversary bash in Rustenburg on January 8.

In a statement, police said over the past few days they have been working with the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structures in the Bojanala District Municipality.

"This has been to both reduce crime in the area and as part of preparations," the statement said.

As part of the run-up to the event, there have been visits from the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC), including the president and deputy president.

"Police and other law enforcement officials have successfully managed minor incidents or offences, such as speeding motorists, selling liquor without licences and other minor infringements without encountering any challenges."

Law enforcement, including crime prevention, event security, route security and the management of traffic flow in and around Bafokeng Sports Stadium, has been increased to cater for the larger volumes of visitors expected.

The following routes in and around the Bafokeng Sports Stadium will be affected from 04:00 on Saturday include: R565 Phokeng with the Sun City road consisting of one lane for 3km from Uncle Thoms shop to the Post office; R565 on Lenatong Road to the East via Buampya and Matale Road.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Jacob Tsumane said they urge all residents and visitors to respect the rule of law and to work with law enforcement officials.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and assure communities that disruptions will be kept to the minimum.  Let us offer our warm North West hospitality to all our visitors," he said.

About 123 000 people were expected to attend the festivities. Zuma is also expected to speak during the course of the event.
