Cape Town – A police officer who shot and injured a 17-year-old Northern Cape school boy will face a disciplinary hearing, Police Minister Nathi Nhleko has said in reply to a question in Parliament.

The police officer was found to have conducted himself in an improper, disgraceful and unacceptable manner, endangered lives, and disregarded safety rules and regulations, Nhleko said in a written reply to a question from DA MP Zakhele Mbhele, published on Wednesday.

The Grade 9 boy at Rietvale Secondary School in Ritchie was shot in the foot, IOL reported in June.

He had allegedly been involved in a fight with the officer’s child.

"The facts revealed that the member fired a warning shot. The incident was thoroughly investigated and referred for a disciplinary hearing which commenced on 19 September 2016," Nhleko said.

On July 15, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate completed its probe into the shooting and submitted its findings to the SAPS. It recommended that the officer face charges in terms of the South African Police Service Discipline Regulations, 2006.
