Kimberley – A 27-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Northern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Adam Lukas was sentenced in the Fraserburg Regional Court on Wednesday last week, said Lieutenant Colonel Dimakatso Mooi.

He was arrested in September 2015 after the body of Jerinica Jacobs, 20, was found lying in a field just outside Fraserburg, said Mooi.

"According to the information received, the victim was murdered on September 5, 2015. The suspect beat the victim to death and left her in the [field]," she said.

"It was through a meticulous investigation conducted by Warrant Officer Fiks of Fraserburg Detectives, and proper gathering of forensic evidence, that led to a successful conviction."
