Pretoria - Former top cop Piet Byleveld is being “kept comfortable” in the Wilgeheuwel Hospital in Roodepoort, but there “is nothing more doctors can do for him”, his wife Elize and daughter Virnalize Welthagen told Netwerk24 on Sunday morning.

“He isn’t doing well at all,” said Welthagen.

Byleveld, 67, who was struggling to breathe, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday evening, according to Rapport.

“Piet Byl”, as he is also known, was diagnosed with phase 4 lung cancer on March 10.

There is also a big tumour in his liver, which has spread to his adrenal gland and spine, Rapport reported.

Byleveld retired in 2010 after a career in the police spanning 38 years.

Cases in which he was involved, included the investigation into the murder of Leigh Matthews,  Sibille Zanner and Sheldean Human, as well as serial killers Cedric Maake and Lazarus Mazingane, the Nasrec murderer.
