Johannesburg - One African National Congress member said he had no option but to take part in the occupy Luthuli House protest due to the decline in support under President Jacob Zuma’s leadership.

“The ANC has to be honest: It’s time to accept that the numbers don’t lie. We have never been stable since he took over, just on a constant decline,” Karabo Ramahuma, an executive member of the Eric Molobi branch in the greater Johannesburg region, said on Tuesday.

He said his branch discussed the occupy Luthuli House initiative.

“Arguments were raised for and against it, with one person disagreeing with the idea. There is no branch resolution on the issue, but I as an ANC member felt I was left with no other option but to attempt to occupy Luthuli House,” he told News24.

Last Monday, a group of ANC members tried to occupy the ANC’s headquarters in central Johannesburg to demand that Zuma and his national executive committee resign.

Consultative conference

Members of both the ANC Youth League and Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans’ Association intimidated and threatened them with violence, saying they were defending Luthuli House.

Organisers of the campaign were scheduled to meet ANC secretary general on Tuesday, to discuss the group’s demands.

Ramahuma said his branch, made up of regions in the South of Johannesburg, discussed the August 3 local government elections. They resolved to call for Zuma and his NEC to step down.

The branch suggested ANC veterans should lead the party in holding a consultative conference from January 4 to 8 2017 - as the ANC marked its 105th birthday.

This was a call the occupy Luthuli House group and the ANC’s Gauteng provincial executive committee had already made.

Ramahuma’s branch however rejected the ANCYL’s calls for an early conference.

“There is no such thing as an early conference in the ANC constitution. Those members clearly failed to read it properly. There is a special conference which can be convened for a number of reasons,” he said.
