Durban - A man suspected of killing a taxi driver was arrested on Tuesday thanks to the vigilance of an off-duty police officer and a helpful community member.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said a minibus taxi was travelling along the R34 near Empangeni Milling on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast when two occupants of the taxi asked the driver to stop so they could get out.

When the driver stopped, the two “passengers” shot and killed him before fleeing on foot.

"A vigilant off-duty police officer from Eshowe was also travelling on the R34 towards Eshowe, when he noticed two males running away from the minibus taxi and he suspected that something went wrong."

Gwala said the officer gave chase with the assistance of a community member.

"He apprehended one suspect in possession of a revolver with three live rounds of ammunition. The firearm's serial number was filed off. The suspect will be charged with murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition," Gwala said.

The suspect will appear in the Ngwelezane Magistrate’s Court soon.

Gwala said the motive for the killing was "unknown at the stage".

"The firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing to check if it was used in the commission of any other crime in the country."

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said they were confident that the second suspect would be arrested soon.

"We applaud the commitment of the community member who assisted in the apprehension of the suspect, which shows the success of community policing," she said.
