Durban - An off-duty police officer was stabbed repeatedly while waiting at a bus stop in Phoenix, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

Major Thulani Zwane said officers arrested a 53-year-old man following the attack on Tuesday.

"A warrant officer stationed in Durban, but who resides in Phoenix, was at the bus stop waiting for transport to work. He was allegedly approached by a male and an argument ensued. When he walked away the man stabbed him several times," Zwane said.

The officer managed to contact police, who arrived and took him to hospital. He was in a critical, but stable condition.

The alleged attacker was arrested when he arrived at the Phoenix police station to report an armed robbery. He would appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on an attempted murder charge on Friday.
