Pretoria- A Bronkhorstspruit police constable killed his girlfriend and an ex-girlfriend before turning the gun on himself, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Friday.

The officer's 23-year-old ex-girlfriend visited her friend, who happened to be the constable’s neighbour, around midday on Thursday, spokesperson Robbie Raburabu said.

The ex then learned that the officer had a new girlfriend, an 18-year-old. She went to the constable's house and returned to the neighbour.

"The neighbour overheard the constable and girlfriend argue shortly thereafter, and then a gunshot went off,” he said.

The neighbour and the ex-girlfriend rushed over to see what had happened. The constable opened the door and grabbed his ex-girlfriend and shot her in the chest. The bullet exited her back.

He then shot himself in the head. His service firearm was found in his hand.

All three died on the scene.
