Durban – Three people, believed to have been returning from collecting their social grant, were swept away during heavy rains in Pietermaritzburg, police said on Wednesday.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that at about 17:00 the driver of the vehicle, carrying six passengers, tried to cross a low-bridge over a flooded river, but that the vehicle was washed away.

A police source, who could not be named because he is not authorised to speak to the media, said the people had gone to get their social grant and were returning home.

"Four people managed to get out of the vehicle and were rescued by community members, the three were swept away by the river… The body of the man was found on Wednesday morning, 20km from the river by farm workers," the police source said.

Zwane said the search was still ongoing for the other victims.

Meanwhile, also on Wednesday, a 12-year-old boy was lucky to escape serious injury after the banks of a dam burst, trapping him between two streams.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics and fire services responded to the incident near the Bruntville Location in Mooi River.

"It is understood that the banks of the nearby dam had burst, causing the streams to overflow, trapping the young boy.

"Paramedics and fire services immediately set out, utilising one of the long ladders from the fire truck to reach the child."

Once the child was brought to safety, paramedics assessed the boy and found that he had escaped without injuries.
