Johannesburg - One person died and 3 people were left critically injured after a head-on collision on the R400 in Hartebeespoort on Saturday evening, paramedics said.

Paramedics found the body of a man lying inside of the vehicles; unfortunately he had already succumbed to his multiple injuries, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

Among the three critically injured was a man, woman and a girl believed to be 13-years-old.

Meiring said rescue workers had to use the jaws-of-life to carefully free and extricate the three patients.

The woman was airlifted to hospital and the man and young girl were transported by ambulance to a hospital in Krugersdorp.

The exact cause of the incident was still unknown. Authorities were on the scene.
