One dead after taxi overturns in Sandton

Johannesburg – One person was killed and 15 were injured when a taxi overturned after colliding with a stationary vehicle on the M1 north after Grayston Drive in Sandton on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said paramedics arrived on the scene at approximately 06:30 where they found the taxi lying on the highway.

One person was found dead on the scene.

Three people were still trapped inside the taxi.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said four of the 15 passengers in the taxi received critical advanced medical care on the scene.

Injuries sustained ranged from cuts, bruises and possible spinal injuries.

The three occupants that were trapped in the vehicle were quickly extricated by the Sandton Fire Department. 

Occupants of the stationary vehicle were not hurt.

Malaudzi said all 15 commuters were taken to various hospitals nearby.
