Johannesburg – A man who was on the police's most wanted list was killed and three others arrested during a car chase on Thursday, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department said.

The men are allegedly linked to a number of car thefts.

On Thursday, two men allegedly stole a Toyota Hilux in the Meadowdale Mall parking lot in Germiston in Gauteng, said spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago.

When the owner realised the vehicle was missing, he activated his tracking device.

Kgasago said an eye witness in the area informed the police of a charcoal Nissan Almera with two occupants who appeared to be accomplices to the thieves of the Toyota Hilux while officers followed the movement of the tracking unit.

“The two suspects in the Almera tried to run over the EMPD officers when metro police confronted the occupants in the stolen Toyota Hilux. The Almera passenger was shot in the shoulder and the driver arrested. The wounded suspect is in a hospital under police guard,” he said.

The two occupants of the stolen Toyota Hilux abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

“Metro police officers pursued the suspects on foot whereupon one pointed a firearm at them. He was shot and fatally wounded. The other suspect was arrested...all four suspects were on the police's wanted list for a spate of [vehicle theft].”

The suspects were found in possession of a plethora of sophisticated car-breaking implements which included various vehicles ignition keys and computer boxes.

A data-dot reader revealed that the Almera was stolen in Soshanguve in August.

The suspects have since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.
