OR Tambo Airport back to normal after evacuation

Johannesburg - It was business as usual at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, after an unattended bag led to the evacuation of the building on Monday.

Airport spokesperson Leigh Gunkel-Keuler, told News24 that Monday's incident had very little impact on incoming and outgoing flights.

She said claims that there were bomb threats at the airport were all speculation.

"Police are still investigating to establish the contents of the bag."

Police alerted their K9 unit on Monday and ordered an evacuation near the international arrivals section, after the discovery of the unattended bag.

The evacuation lasted for more than an hour.

"When [the] instruction came to evacuate from [the] police, we assisted," she said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale confirmed that they were still investigating.

Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi commended Airport Company South Africa's (ACSA) and the police's response to the unattended bag. 

"We are grateful for the calm and selfless conduct by passengers when ACSA officials and law enforcement agencies asked for their co-operation during the security evacuation procedure," Maswanganyi said. 

He apoligised for the inconvenience caused to the passengers, and said police still had identify the owner of the bag.
