Cape Town - The Oudtshoorn municipality has had its mayoral chain and office furniture attached in order to pay compensation to a woman who was hospitalised after she slipped on an open drain and fell.

The Cape Times reported on Monday that the sheriff of the court seized the items last week after the woman sued the municipality for about R140 000.

However, the items will be returned this week after an insurance company paid out the claim in full, according to the report. The company apologised for embarrassing the municipality.

The incident is the latest in a number of problems plaguing the Garden Route municipality. It was placed under administration in the middle of last year while it was operating on a R160m budget deficit.

The Department of Co-operative Governance intervened after the municipal council violated the Municipal Finance Management Act by being unable to pass its 2015/16 budget.

A five-year financial recovery plan has been created, Oudtshoorn administrator Kam Chetty told the Cape Times.
