A veld fire left a local scrapyard counting its losses on Monday after 13 scrap cars were gutted by fire.

Responding quickly, fire fighters managed to douse the fire before it spread further. Atlas Used Spares owner Iqram Faruk said in addition to 13 cars, some equipment and a storage container were also damaged by the fire.

Scrapyard manager Mohammed Shaik said the fire had started at a distance before a strong wind fanned it towards the scrapyard’s fence.

“It appeared from nowhere and intensified very fast. From the distance it had started, I never thought there was any chance it could end up coming to us.

“But a sudden wind blew up, causing it to change direction towards us. Before I knew it the cars were in flames and there was nothing I could do to douse it,” said Shaik.

Eyewitness Thalha Amod said he had been walking towards the scrapyard to buy parts when the massive fire suddenly broke out. “Within seconds, five cars had burnt. The firemen responded very fast and did their job very well to prevent it spreading further …” he said.
