Four people have been killed and thirteen others seriously injured after a taxi collided with a truck on the N3 Pinetown Bound near the M7, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

The incident happened on Thursday afternoon just after 13:00, said Rescue Care Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson in a statement.

He said when paramedics arrived on scene, they found "carnage".

"A taxi had collided into the rear of a truck which was allegedly broken down in the centre of the national freeway, the taxi was torn open and then overturned ejecting passengers all over the road.

"Immediately multiple ambulances as well as Advanced Life Support units were dispatched to assist," he said.

"The Lenmed 1 Aeromedical Helicopter as well as another Helicopter was dispatched to assist with the multiple casualty scene."

He said three men and one woman had sustained major injuries. They were declared dead on the scene.

Jamieson said the injured victims were transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care.
