Durban – Three children died of smoke inhalation after their home caught fire in Ntabamhlophe in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal midlands, police said on Friday.

The children – two boys, aged three and six, and a three-year-old girl - died of suffocation when their home caught fire at about 22:30 on Thursday, said Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.

"They were taken to hospital where they died on arrival," Zwane told News24.

Police tweeted on Friday that the fire was allegedly caused by an illegal electricity connection.

However, when asked about this, Zwane said the cause of the fire was unknown.

"Ntabamhlophe police are investigating an inquest docket and circumstances around the incident," Zwane said.
