Port Elizabeth - Jayde Panayiotou's husband Christopher also owned an Internet lounge with gambling on the side in Port Elizabeth, but it was registered in an employee's name, the High Court heard on Thursday.

Laurika Booi, who works at the Infinity nightclub co-owned by Christopher Panayiotou, told the court the I Net Lounge in Cotswold shopping centre, owned by him, was registered in her name.

She earned a salary for working there.

When asked by Panayiotou's advocate Terry Price SC why it was necessary to bring this matter up, prosecutor Marius Stander explained that it was to show that Panayiotou may have had another income stream to get the R80 000 he allegedly paid to have his wife killed.

''You need to come up with more than speculation and blatant thumb suck,'' Price said in objection to the line of questioning.

Booi had also worked at Panayiotous' OK Grocer in the city.

She said the Internet cafe did not make that much money, but that between R3 000 to R4 000 was taken out of the till weekly by Panayiotou before his arrest.

Booi also paid the shop's rent out of the till and kept a float of only R3000 for security reasons because the shop was not safe.

Jayde disappeared on 21 April while waiting for her lift to school where she was a teacher.

Panayiotou, Sinethemba Nenembe and Zolani Sibeko are on trial and have pleaded not guilty to conspiring, kidnapping, robbing and killing her.

Sizwezakhe Vumazonke, believed to be the hitman hired by State witness Luthando Siyoni, died in a Port Elizabeth hospital in September.

Siyoni worked as a bouncer at the Infinity Cocktail Bar in Algoa Park.

The trial continues.
