Bloemfontein – A paramedic and two other people were killed when an ambulance collided with a car in the Free State early on Friday morning, the provincial health department said.

The head-on collision happened on the N8 between Thaba Nchu and Tweespruit, spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said.

The woman paramedic and two occupants of the car were killed. The woman's partner was taken to Pelonomi Hospital.

The ambulance crew was coming from Thaba Nchu after refuelling on what had been a relatively quiet night.

Health MEC Benny Malakoane sent his condolences to the families of the deceased.

"We are in the business of saving lives and it is an exception when our own have to be involved in such incidents, as victims,” he said.
