Durban - A newborn baby boy with his umbilical cord still attached was found along a road in KwaMashu, paramedics said on Tuesday.

"The newborn child, with the placenta still attached, was found abandoned in Chakide Road," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

The baby was rushed to a nearby clinic.

"The emergency care practitioner and the nursing staff cut the cord and placed the baby on oxygen until he was well oxygenated."

The baby has been left in the care of the nursing staff until further arrangements can be made.

A police investigation into the case is underway.
