Johannesburg  Parents have been urged to begin the 2017 school admissions process early, and online, the Gauteng education department said on Sunday.
“The Gauteng department of education calls on parents to first register and verify their details, and then apply for space for grades 1 and 8 for the 2017 academic year,” said MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, in a statement.
He said that the process for new students would run from April 11 until September 7.
Applicants were encouraged to register online at “Parents that do not have internet access can visit help desks in their districts for assistance,” Lesufi said.
From Monday, parents would need to register and verify their details. From April 19 until June 1, parents could then apply for a place in particular schools.
Criteria for which school to select could include one located nearby a residential or work address or one that was already being attended by another sibling. Alternatively, parents could select a school of their own choice.
Parents would also need various identification documents to complete this part of the registration process.
The placement of students would begin from June 24 and continue until September 7.
For students already in school in Grades 2 to 6 or Grades 8 to 11, their applications would be processed by schools next week.
Parents re-locating or those who had students “in-between” grades would need to liaise directly with schools in order to find out if spaces were available.
Pupils in Grade R and those needing to be placed in special needs schools would not be able to apply online.
