Johannesburg – A cold front that hit the central and eastern parts of the country on Wednesday has broken the hot summer and warm autumn days South Africa has experienced this year.

Gauteng saw a dramatic drop in temperature compared to Tuesday, which was accompanied by bitingly cold winds.

According to the SA Weather Service, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal would remain cool on Thursday and Friday, especially during the evenings and early mornings.

This was due to drier air and the chilly wind accompanying the cold front.

There were also thunderstorms in parts of the Free State and North West.

Forecaster, Mbavhi Maliage, said the cold front was only expected to last until Saturday with temperatures recovering again on Sunday.

Highveld temperatures in certain areas were expected to drop into the single digits in the evenings until Friday.

Thursday would see Gauteng with a maximum temperature of 18° C, with Friday expected to hit a high of 21° C. Temperatures would rise again on Sunday to a maximum of 26° C.

Maliage said there were no more cold fronts expected after this one had passed.
