Durban - A pedestrian, believed to be in his 60s, was knocked down and killed on the N3 near the Hayfields split in Pietermaritzburg, paramedic services said on Wednesday.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said that, shortly after 19:00 on Tuesday, paramedics were approached by bystanders at a petrol station who said the man had been knocked down on the highway.

"ER24 paramedics made their way to the scene and found the man on the road with no signs of life. Sadly, there was nothing that they could do for him and he was declared dead on the scene."

Vermaak said the occupants of the vehicle that knocked the pensioner down were not injured.

"The occupants of the vehicle were assessed by paramedics."

The incident was later handed over to local authorities for further investigation, Vermaak added.
