Johannesburg – At least 11 women and two men were removed from a dilapidated building in central Johannesburg and taken to a city shelter, Johannesburg metro police said on Thursday.

Over 100 members from entities including the SA Police Service, metro police, Johannesburg Roads Agency, Joburg Water, social services and Pikitup swept through the building on the corner of Commissioner and Goud streets, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

They confiscated five toy guns, 10 knives, two baseball bats, dagga, cellphones, and an undisclosed amount of Zimbabwean dollars.

Residents had complained about people being attacked in the area. They felt the building was a health hazard because part of it had already collapsed and it had no running water or electricity.

The owners were instructed to have the old building demolished by next week.
