Cape Town - The trial of a Western Cape policeman accused of defeating the ends of justice while allegedly moonlighting as a private investigator was postponed in the Bellville Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday.

Paul Scheepers faces 26 charges of breaking various laws regarding information gathering while doing a sideline business as a private investigator.

He was also allegedly in possession of a ''grabber'', a surveillance device that can intercept cellphone calls and track the location of cellphones.

He faces charges of allegedly violating the Electronic Communications Act, perjury, and defeating the ends of justice.

The ANC in the Western Cape has claimed that provincial premier Helen Zille was using Scheepers to spy on them. She has denied this. She wrote in a newsletter that in 2010, the provincial cabinet decided to have its offices debugged and contracted his company, Eagle Eye Solutions Technology, to do so.

Scheepers was arrested in May 2015, after raids on his office at the police crime intelligence's provincial premises in Bishop Lavis and the offices of Eagle Eye Solutions Technology, in Southfield.

His case would return to the court on September 27.
